Humble Beginnings

A great thing with the rise of the startup is the numerous success stories that we see, read, or hear about, daily.

A very bad thing with the rise of the startup is the numerous success stories that we see, read, or hear about, daily.

Yes, you read that right: The same thing is great and very bad at the same time.

They are great, because all those stories are very inspirational and a very strong force pushing you to actually “chase your dream to build something of your own”. And very bad, because all those stories most of the times omit the “not so enjoyable” details of the journey.

While Not Doing Things, Listen To People

This post was triggered by Wakoopa’s announcement that they are shutting down their social version in order to focus on their main product. I’ve been using it for years and I hope they consider a premium version. And, even if I don’t know them, wish them the best!

Greece has debt. Greece is going to have elections. What Greece doesn’t have is postal ballots for the more than four million Greeks living abroad.

My country is “in crisis“. The events of the past two years (along with those of the past thirty years – but that’s a story for a whole different blog post) have defined a pretty dark future for it: almost every family has, at least, a loan from a bank that they have to pay, almost everybody is watching their salary being shockingly reduced, the elders are having their pensions (which they themselves helped “create” by paying all those years) being cut and “austerity” measures are being introduced every other day (this is a huge list, don’t say you were not warned). In that country, amidst people committing suicide, the (not elected but assigned) Prime Minister announced yesterday that the General Elections will take place next month (6th of May). And I want to vote I can’t. Because I live abroad.

A photo a day

One of the things I want to do more often is taking photos. I always liked capturing moments, thoughts, colors, expressions, etc but it’s one of these things that I would only do every once in a while. A new place like Berlin is the perfect opportunity and inspiration to try sticking to it. I decided to start a little “project” which I call “A photo a day” and here you go with my first eighteen days in Berlin right after the jump (embed using Slideflickr since flickr doesn’t seem to be able to post a specific set to my blog)! Goodbye London, Γειά σου Αθήνα, Guten Tag Berlin!

Almost one year ago I was in Egham (a small town in Surrey, south-west of London), compiling my CV, applying for jobs, talking on the phone with agents and prospective employers and having interviews. Oh, and trying to revise for my final year exams!

The plan was clear: more interviews, graduation, summer holidays in Greece for a few weeks and then back in London to start working (hopefully at a startup). I can’t say it went bad, I could keep having interviews forever and I had even started looking for a house to rent!
